The incident came to light when Dr Geetharani, the Deputy Director of Health Services in Thoothukudi district was inspecting those who have been admitted and were being treated for dengue. According to Director of Public Health, Dr Kolandaisamy, dengue patients need to be treated using tablets and intravenous fluids. But, a 9-year-old dengue patient in Selva Nursing Home Hospital was being given a steroid injection. Similarly, another patient admitted for the fever in the same hospital was being treated similarly.
Dr Geetharani sent a report to Dr Kolandaisamy. Considering this, the Director of Public Health sent a complaint letter to the Tamil Nadu Medical Council urging appropriate action to be taken against the doctor. Based on this, the council sought clarification from Dr Selvakumari, the director of Selva Nursing Home Hospital. “The medical council will investigate the matter. We insist that doctors follow standardised treatment procedures to treat dengue fever,” said Tamil Nadu Health Minister Dr C Vijaya Baskar.
