Chennai
The incident happened when the sub-inspector, P Kumar (54), of Teynampet traffic police tried to stop a fight between G Vetrivel Murugan of Guduvanchery and another man. They were fighting in the middle of the road and causing a traffic block.
Vetrivel Murugan is an IT firm employee and his father was identified as Gajendra. The incident happened in the peak traffic hours of Monday morning when Kumar was regulating traffic at Cenotaph Road junction.
When Vetrivel Murugan, who was in his car, was arguing with a two-wheeler rider by blocking the traffic, Kumar asked them to move the vehicles to a side.
Following that, Vetrivel verbally abused Kumar and when the latter retorted, he took out a knife from the car and tried to attack him. In the melee, SI’s uniform was torn.
Later passers-by intervened and handed over Vetrivel to the Teynampet police.
While Kumar has lodged a complaint against him, when contacted, the Teynampet police said they are inquiring about the incident.
