    The police have arrested a 25-year-old man who tried to break open an ATM in Pozhichalur in the wee hours of Tuesday.

    The arrested person was identified as Arul Mani from Ulundurpettai in Villupuram, who is a construction worker in Chennai. The ICICI bank ATM kiosk, which was targetted, is situated in Nehru Nagar in Pozhichalur near Pallavaram. On Tuesday, around 2.10 am, staff monitoring the CCTV footages in the bank’s headquarters in Mumbai noticed a man entering the kiosk and trying to break it open.

    They immediately informed the Shankar Nagar police station in the locality. While the police were rushing to the spot, Arul heard the police patrol vehicle approaching and escaped from the spot.

    The police, who reached the kiosk, found hammers and screwdrivers on the floor. They said that when they browsed the CCTV camera footage which was fixed in Nehru Nagar, they found a man running out of the ATM booth and entering the nearby construction site.

    The police searched the site and arrested Arul. During the inquiry, Arul told the police that there has been no work for the past few days due to continues rain and he was struggling without money.

    He reportedly said that it was his first time involving in any kind of crime. The Shankar Nagar police arrested him and also contacted the Villupuram police to check whether Arul Mani has any pending cases against him.
