Monsoon preparedness: Civic body inspects work carried out on 7,365 drains
With the Northeast monsoon at the door, the Greater Chennai Corporation conducted a review meeting with engineers and contractors under the corporation commissioner on implementation of rainwater harvesting work in the city in anticipation of monsoon.

“We inspected the works being carried out on 7,365 rainwater drains in 1,636 km of suburban areas in the city. Minor maintenance work is being carried out in 3,598 places and 10,346 human gateways are being repaired. The project cost for rainwater drains and human gateways is approximately Rs 35 crore,” said Corporation Commissioner G Prakash.
It is estimated that about 3,22,809 cubic meters of sediments will be discharged from rainwater drains and at the meeting, it was reported that up to 98,000 cubic meters of sediments has been removed till date.
“We have also instructed engineers and contractors that the locations of the work which is in process should be photographed and sent to the relevant higher authorities,” said Corporation Commissioner.
In addition, during the monsoon, contractors have been asked to provide four to five workers for each ward. The commissioner also ordered the zonal officers to take proper action against inefficient contractors.
