    Train runs over 14-yr-old hearing-impaired boy

    A 14-year-old hearing-impaired boy died when a train ran over him while crossing the railway track near Perungalathur, on Thursday.

    The deceased was identified as R Pradeep, a resident of MGR Street in Kamarajar Nagar near Perungalathur. Police said that Pradeep was studying in a government school near Tambaram Sanatorium. On Thursday morning, a day after the quarterly holiday was over, he was walking towards the Perungalathur railway station for boarding the EMU. Around 9 am, Pradeep was crossing the railway track near Erikkarai when he was run over by the local EMU which was heading towards Chengalpattu from Beach station.


    Onlookers claimed that few school students from different schools also crossed the railway track at that time. After hearing the horn, they all moved away. But nobody noticedPradeep and nor were they aware that he had a hearing problem. Pradeep also did not notice the train.


    The Tambaram Railway Police and Railway Protection Force who arrived at the spot retrieved the body and sent it for post-mortem examination at Chromepet Government Hospital. The train halted in the station for more than 30 minutes after the accident. Regular commuters said that Railways should take steps to stop the people, especially school students, from crossing the tracks Erikkarai, pointing out that this was not the first such incident. Over the years, many people, including school students, have lost their lives while crossing the rail tracks near the spot, they added.


    The Tambaram Railway police have also registered a case.
