Leaders of the AIADMK and Opposition were involved in a heated argument on Thursday after Madras High Court ruled in favour of the government in erecting banners to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping for the summit next week.

After Subhasri’s death, the court has taken the position that banners should not be kept in public places causing disturbance to the public, contended Minister D Jayakumar, adding: “The court has permitted erecting banners in places where permission has been obtained previously.”
However, the opposition parties have reacted sharply against the government for seeking permission for erecting banners. “AIADMK did not condole the death of Subhasri, but before her cemetery dried up, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has approached the High Court seeking permission for setting up banners,” said DMK president MK Stalin in a tweet.
It would be appreciable if the State government showed the same interest in solvingthe problems of the people, Stalin said, charging that the Chief Minister who was engrossed in only show-offs.
According to State Congress president KS Alagiri, there were several other ways to advertise the arrival of the leaders other than hoardings.
“After the death of Subhasri, political parties and organisations have taken a pledge not to erect digital banners. It is a shame that State government itself has sought permission to erect banners. There are various ways to welcome top leaders. Advertisements can be given for several pages in media, it can be advertisement through wall paintings, wall posters can be pasted or people can be made to stand in long queues towelcome the leaders,” said Alagiri, wondering why the State and Central governmentswere giving so much importance to advertisements.
