Highway stretch till Sriperumbudur to be repaired soon
Facing complaints from motorists over the poor condition of the road which is hindering the movement of vehicles leading to heavy traffic congestion, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has invited bids to award contract for the maintenance of the stretch from Sriperumbudur to Maduravoyal on Chennai-Bengaluru National Highway.

The 37-km stretch from Sriperumbudur to Maduravoyal witnesses heavy congestion during the peak hours, which gets worse at the junctions where road is severely damaged and pothole-ridden. “Once the operation and maintenance contract is awarded, the condition of the National Highway stretch from Sriperumbudur to Maduravoyal would improve.
The contractor has to maintain the stretch without any potholes,” a senior NHAI official said, adding that the bids for the annual contract for the road maintenance was being invited after few issues. “The contract was not issued due to some technical issues. Now we have invited bids again for awarding maintenance contract,” the official said.
The motorists heading to Sriperumbudur or those entering the city through the industrial town on the Chennai-Bengaluru National Highway are greeted with heavy traffic once they reach Nazarathpet. At Nazarathpet junction, the traffic congestion becomes heavy, with the vehicles from Outer Ring Road, Poonamallee bypass road and Trunk Road merge.
“The road surface has become damaged after Nazarathpet, which slows down the vehicles. In particular, the road surface at Parivakkam, Tiruverkadu and Vanagaram junctions are badly damaged. It takes nearly 30 to 40 minutes to cross these three busy junctions on the Chennai-Bengaluru highway during the peak hours,” said K Ashok, the driver of a private company bus.
The NHAI official said that the junctions along the Poonamallee-Maduravoyal stretch were severely damaged due to heavy movement of the water tankers. “Spilling of the water by the tankers led to the road damage at these junctions. So we have taken up junction improvements works at Parivakkam, Tiruverkadu and Vanagaram. We will lay concrete road at the junctions as part of the work,” theofficial said.
