They suspect misappropriation of funds by Chennai Metro Water staff. In the petition, the public also wanted to know why their lane was ignored in the sanctioned project.
“About 150 families in Naval Hospital Road First Lane, Ambedkar Nagar, coming under ward 58 is paying property tax and metro water charges. The residents have been ignored from the water supply scheme since last Lok Sabha polls,” rued AMMK ward secretary B Venkatesh.
Four years ago, the metro water officials laid new pipes for 12 roads in Periamet and much to the shock of residents the first lane which has around 900 votes were ignored. Till date there was no explanation on what happened to the funds that was sanctioned for that road. Now, the Metro Water authorities were laying the drainage work pipes, but again not in the first lane of the area.
The general logic was that the authorities give water and drainage connection at the same time, but to our area it was strange. They were ready to lay the drainage pipes, but there was no word on drinking water lines. The existing water pipes laid three decades back is worn out and clogged, Venkatesh said.
“Metro Water has started digging the road and the public will be thankful to the authorities if the water and drainage connections are given before the arrival of monsoon,” added S Silambarasan, a resident of Periamet.
According to Egmore MLA KS Ravichandran, the issue of water supply has improved in the constituency. “Regarding this issue, I will hold a discussion with the officials concerned seeking a solution,” the MLA told DT Next.
When contacted, a senior official with Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board on this, the official said that the CMWSSB grievance cell would look into the issue if a representation was made.
