According to Chennai Corporation sources, the extension had come into effect from September 22. Ramky Enviro Engineers was awarded a seven-year contract to do conservancy works in Adyar, Teynampet and Kodambakkam zones before giving a six-month extension in April this year.

Sources suggest that the extension has been given after the civic body failed to appoint a new private company to carry out the conservancy works one time. Of the around 5,000 tonnes of garbage collected in the city, Adyar, Kodambakkam and Teynampet amount to more than 2,000 tonnes of garbage every day.

“We have also floated tenders in two packages to hand over the conservancy works in Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Ambattur, Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Perungudi and Sholinganallur. A tender was also floated for Adyar, Teynampet and Kodambakkam,” an official said.

Due to several factors, including miscalculation of estimation, the contractors kept themselves away from vying for the multi-crore bids. This has forced the civic body to tweak the tender documents. After several re-tenders, the bids were finally opened last month.

“We are evaluating the bids and it will take two or three weeks to finalize the potential bidders,” the official said. Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited (TNUIFSL) has floated a separate tender inviting an independent engineer to monitor waste collection and disposal by the private conservancy firms.
