Narrow escape for two students as car falls into Buckingham canal
Two students of a private college had a narrow escape as the car they were travelling in ran amok and fell into the Buckingham canal from KK Salai that connects Rajiv Gandhi Salai (OMR) and East Coast Road (ECR) on Sunday.

The duo managed to swim to the bund as they were able to open the car door.The incident happened around 11 am when the duo, Viru Kumar and Ajay of Andhra Pradesh, who are pursuing engineering at a private college in the city, decided to go for a drive on ECR. When they were proceeding towards ECR from OMR on KK Salai, the car lost control, ran into bushes off the road and divided into the Buckingham canal. The duo managed to open the car door and swam to the bund.
On information, the Semmanchery traffic investigation police rushed to the spot and deployed an earthmover to take out the car. Investigation with the duo revealed that the car engine suddenly stopped while they were travelling at high speed. The brakes were also functioning. “To avoid colliding with other vehicles, they drove it off road and fell into the canal,” said the police.
A case has been registered and further inquiry is on.
Man fatally knocked down by MTC bus in Koyambedu
A 48-year-old man was fatally knocked down by a government bus at Koyambedu on Sunday.
The deceased, Murugesan of Cuddalore, was staying in Maduravoyal and running a juice shop on
Jawaharlal Nehru Salai, said the police. The incident happened around 11 am when Murugesan went to unload ice bars from a mini truck across the road.
An MTC bus (route No 113 plying between Guindy and Red Hills) hit him and Murugesan was thrown away in the impact. He suffered grievous injuries on his head and died on the spot. On information, the Koyambedu traffic investigation police registered a case and sent Murugesan’s body for post-mortem examination to the government hospital. The MTC driver, Deepan (32), was detained for further investigation.
In another incident, a 60-year-old woman was run over by a four-wheeler in Virugambakkam on Saturday night. The woman, identified as Usha, died on the spot and the police are searching for vehicle that caused the accident. It happened around 10 pm on Arcot Salai and the Pondy Bazaar traffic investigation police said that it was a jeep that killed the woman after going through the CCTV footage recovered from the locality. Further investigation is on.
