Lawyer’s wife pledges jewels, couple file fake burglary plaint

Two days after receiving a complaint from a lawyer that 150 sovereigns were burgled from his house in Saidapet, police have found that it was a fake complaint, and that the ‘missing’ gold was pledged and sold by his wife to buy a house without his knowledge.

In the complaint on Thursday, Sathyamoorthy (52) and his wife Jothi claimed that a sorcerer who visited their house the previous day to perform a ritual to ward off evil eye when he was out of town, escaped with the jewels. Jothi claimed she became unconscious during the Pooja and woke up only few hours later.

However, when the team from Saidapet police checked the CCTV footage from the two-storey apartment, they found none had visited the house on that day. They grilled the couple, who remained firm on the claim. However, their son finally spilled the beans, informing the police that Jothi pledged 74 sovereigns for Rs 14 lakh and sold the remaining.

When confronted with this information, Jothi reportedly admitted, and said she booked a house with the sum. She told the police that it was done without Sathyamoorthy’s knowledge because he was opposed to the plan and then staged a burglary drama. However, police suspect him as well, as he went absconding after lodging the complaint and did not cooperate in the investigation.

“Jothi got herself admitted to a private hospital claiming to have suffered a heart attack,” added police sources. The officers are now mulling to book the couple and take action against them.
