The accused was identified as Aruna Hansika of Avadi, HR manager of a company called E-jobs. She was remanded in judicial custody on Wednesday. The police said that the firm is owned by Ruban Chakravarthy. The duo cheated about 70 job aspirants of Rs 35 lakh on the promise of getting them jobs abroad, said police.

Ruban collected job aspirants’ data from job portals and made Aruna contact them over phone to inform that they have been shortlisted for jobs in Malaysia. “They made the victims visit their office at a commercial plaza in Nungambakkam and received Rs 50,000 from each person, promising that they would get the visa to work in Malaysia in a month,” said the police. When they failed to receive any information about the job offer even after a month, those who paid the money visited the office again only to find it closed.

Based on their complaint, the Thousand Lights police registered a case and picked up Aruna for interrogation. As it was confirmed that she too was involved in the cheating, the police remanded her. A hunt has been launched for Ruban Chakravarthy, who remains at large.
