Justice G Jayachandran before whom the plea moved by the student T Kirubamohan came up for hearing, while refusing to grant any interim relief ordered notice to the University returnable by September 24.

Kirubamohan had submitted that on passing out of Engineering in 2013, he had joined for MA, degree course in Journalism and Communication in Madras University in June 2016 and successfully obtained the degree in April 2018. Thereafter, he had applied for MA in Buddhism at the same University during the academic year 2019-20 following which admission was granted through an order dated July 31, 2019. Based on this, the Madras University received all the original certificates and had been attending classes for the past two months.

However, on August 28, 2019, a communication from the University stated that his admission was not approved without attributing any specific reason. But, pursuant to the expulsion the Madras University Vice-Chancellor told the media that he was thrown out of college for being a member of ‘Ambedkar Periyar Study Circle’.Coming from a socially and economically background I found the thought of Dr Ambedkar and Periyar inspirational. But, since I seem to have been expelled from the University for the said reasons the impugned order is nothing but a clear victimisation for having rational thoughts, he said. Based on this, he sought the court to declare his expulsion as illegal and arbitrary and permit him to continue his studies and complete the course.
