Of the total 4,930 tonnes of garbage collected, the civic body segregates and compost 400 tonnes of organic waste. The Corporation operates 139 micro composting centres, 537 bamboo pits apart from other composting facilities.
Meanwhile, Chennai Corporation also had assured to employ dedicated conservancy worker for each of residents’ welfare association in the city for do door-to-door waste collection. “The decision was taken in a meeting with residents’ welfare associations of Adyar zone. Meeting with residents’ welfare associations of other zones will be conducted shortly,” an official said.
The official added that the measure has been taken to implement source segregation more effectively. Meanwhile, the associations had demanded the civic body impose penalties against the residents who fail to segregate waste.
