    Techies, students form most of ganja peddler’s 1,400 clients, say cops

    A team of the city police busted a ganja racket and nabbed nine persons, including a 32-year-old man from Melur near Madurai, who claimed to have more than 1,400 customers, mostly students and techies, across the city.

    Following information that ganja was being peddled to college students in and around Triplicane, a special team comprising Deputy Commissioner G Suguna Singh, Assistant Commissioner R Saravanan and Anna Salai inspector T Chandramohan conducted inquiries college students and secured K Singaraj (32) of Melur.


    Investigation revealed that he rented a house in Adyar to store the smuggled ganja and distributed it to his regular customers who placed order over phone. He reportedly told police that he has more than 1,400 customers, mostly school and college students besides software professionals. “He said the demand for ganja is so much that he needsat least 50 kg ganja for four days,” said an investigation officer.


    His room in Adyar was searched, from where four kg ganja was seized. After he informed police that he procured ganja from Andhra Pradesh through three persons, Pandi of Maduravoyal, Priyalakshmi of Nellore in Andhra Pradesh and Subramani alias Amaldoss from Teynampet were secured.


    Based on the inputs from Pandi, his accomplices Selvam, Durai and Varadaraj from Maduravoyal were secured, and 36 kg ganja and an autorickshaw which was used to supply ganja across the city were seized. Further investigation led to the arrest of other gang members, identified as A Suryadoss (24) of Teynampet and V Varadarajan (55) of Maduravoyal.


    The team also seized three kg ganja from Priyalakshmi. All nine persons were remanded in judicial custody.


    1.2 kg ganja seized from peddler


    Meanwhile, Sathangadu police have arrested a man in possession of 1.2 kg ganja. Police said that they secured S Sarankumar (24) of Kasimedu from the steelyard on Saturday night based on a tip-off that he has been peddling ganja in small sachets. He was remanded in judicial custody. Foreshore Estate police, too, arrested a peddler and seized 6 kg ganja from him.


    Trio held for selling fermented rice beer


    Tiruvottiyur police have arrested three persons, including two women, for selling sundakanji (fermented rice beer) in the locality. Based on a specific tip-off, police officers secured D Vinothkumar (34), A Kalpana (39) and S Desamma (78) of Tiruvottiyur whilethey were selling it and seized 35 litres of the country liquor. All three were remanded in judicial custody.
