Auto driver commits suicide citing police inaction on vehicle theft complaint
An autorickshaw driver committed suicide in Kilpauk dejected over police officers’ inaction to trace his stolen vehicle, his relatives alleged on Sunday. The deceased was identified as Rajesh of Mandapam Street in Kilpauk Garden.
Chennai
Speaking to the media, Rajesh’s relatives said that his autorickshaw was stolen in January when he went to withdraw cash from an ATM in Ayanavaram after a ride. Immediately, he had lodged a complaint at the TP Chathiram police station.
The police officers subsequently issued a Community Service Register (CSR) receipt. However, the police allegedly did not act upon the complaint, they said.
Meanwhile, Rajesh recently saw his stolen auto being ridden by another person in the same locality. Even after he lodged another complaint against the person who had his vehicle, Rajesh’s kin alleged that the police did not take any action to recover theÂ
vehicle.
Dejected over this, Rajesh committed suicide by hanging at his house on Saturday night. The police retrieved his body and sent it for post-mortem examination to the hospital.
When contacted, Kilpauk Assistant Commissioner Raja refuted the allegations and added that Rajesh committed suicide due to family dispute. The official also said that police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) after he lodged a complaint that his auto was stolen.Â
