Nurse stages abduction drama to help boyfriend go abroad

The woman, A Vidya (22) from Telangana, worked as a nurse in a private hospital, her boyfriend, identified as Mano (25) of Karaikal, used to work in a software firm.

On Wednesday, Vidya informed her brother Vignesh (24), a techie, that she returned to Chennai from Karaikal by bus after attending a wedding in Tirunallar. But a day later, their father Arumugam received a call from an anonymous number informing him that Vidya has been kidnapped and would be released only if he paid a ransom of Rs 10 lakh. The duo also called Vignesh with the same demand and to convince him, Vidya spoke in a feeble voice begging to be rescued.

After Vignesh lodged a complaint at Koyambedu police station, a special team headed by Joint Commissioner Vijayakumari with three assistant commissioners and seven inspectors started probing the incident.

Investigation with the help of call records led to the arrest of Mano from Karaikal. When he was interrogated, Mano revealed that he and Vidya were in a relationship for a few years. They had together hatched the plan to get Rs 10 lakh from Vidya’s father as he needed money to go abroad. Based on his confession, Vidya was secured from Cuddalore. “Vidya’s father recently sold a land for Rs 14 lakh and she wanted to help her boyfriend with the money,” said police. Both Vidya and Mano have been remanded to judicial custody.
