Telemedicine services at the hospital will serve as a national platform for multiple doctors and patients to share information in real-time from one computer screen to another. Telemedicine refers to the practice of attending patients at a distant location, mostly in rural locations, when the medicos and patient are not physically present with each other, through a common online platform. Stanley Medical College will be using HIPAA compliant video-conferencing tools to enable doctors to consult patients by using telemedicine software.

“Government Stanley Hospital is the only hospital in Tamil Nadu that has Telemedicine facility where senior doctors and other medical college professors can connect with at least 12 other medical colleges and hospitals, including AIIMS, Tata Memorial and other hospitals. We are using this facility to teach the postgraduate students also,” said Dr S Jeswanth, professor, Institute of Surgical Gastroenterology and liver transplantation, Stanley Medical College.

This year, seven postgraduate students have opted to be trained in telemedicine and will be allowed to see and capture presentations/queries from a faraway location.

“The training will improve patient care and enhance knowledge of students on cases that are difficult to manage. For the current term, the gadgets and software have been donated by a private hospital in the city,” said dean Dr R Shanthimalar.
