Kutti Ammal recently donated her entire life savings worth Rs 90,000 to a city NGO, Akshaya Trust, that has been working to provide shelter to aged persons.

“After my marriage at an early age, I moved to Chennai and began selling flowers at Teynampet traffic signal for my livelihood. I managed to save some money from the flower selling business, but had no one I could give it to. After three years of residing at one of the NGO’s old-age homes, I decided to donate my savings to them, hoping that the money could be of use to other old people too,” Kutti Ammal tells us.

For the Trust, which was founded by G Gopalan over 15 years ago to give home to old persons, who lost their family members or were deserted by them, it was an emotional moment to see one of their residents donate life savings. Bhuvaneswari Elangovan, who works with the NGO, says, “It was a very touching gesture for all of us to see Kutti Ammal give back all that she had saved so that the NGO could use the money for helping others. We hope that her gesture inspires others to donate for good causes, even if the amount is tiny.”
