Politicians, educationists condemn madras varsity student’s dismissal

“Kiruba Mohan joined MA Philosophy in the current academic year and after one month of attending classes, he was informed that his admission was cancelled. When asked, he was informed that there was pressure from Governor’s office to remove him as he was in Ambedkar-Periyar Study Circle,” MDMK general secretary Vaiko said in a statement.

Vaiko also said that Kiruba Mohan completed BA Journalism in Madras University and joined Postgraduate education in the same university. As he joined the same university, he does not require any qualification certificate other than his UG degree, but he was removed without giving any proper reason.

When asked initially, the university authorities have informed him that he did not produce qualification certificate but when he proved his case, he was informed by officials at the Vice-Chancellor’s office that he was in Ambedkar-Periyar Study Circle, which was not liked by the authorities.

“The very names Ambedkar and Periyar have become allergic to Governor and the authorities and Kiruba Mohan, who joined the Ambedkar-Periyar Study Circle has been vocal against the Hindutva forces. To prevent him from speaking against Hindutva forces, the Governor has decided to end the educational career of a postgraduate student,” said Vaiko.

Similarly, educationists attached to Save Higher Education Movement-TN have also condemned the dismissal of Kiruba Mohan. “There was no investigation conducted, rather there was no proper reason given for his dismissal. There was no qualification certificate required for Kiruba Mohan and if there is one required, Madras University should provide as he completed his undergraduate course in the same university,” said R Murali, State organiser of the movement.

He also said that the case of Kiruba Mohan is an example of excess intervention of Governor’s office in the day-to-day administration of university and it a dangerous trend for the state. However, the TN Governor’s office had denied any role in the issue.
