After preliminary inquiry, police said he was in a relationship with two women simultaneously, and was forced to marry the deceased, a final year engineering student following pressure from the family.

The police arrested the man after his wife’s father discovered the recording of a conference call that the girl had with the accused, A Abinraj, a native of Tirunelveli now residing at Trisulam, and his other lover.

Abinraj, a mini van driver, was in a relationship with M Manisha (21), a Trisulam resident who was in her final year at a private engineering college in Chennai. Facing opposition from her father Murugan, Manisha had left her house last year and was staying in Abinraj’s relative house in Pammal. Murugan had filed a complaint with the Shankar Nagar police alleging that Abinraj kidnapped his daughter. However, when inquired by the police, Manisha said Abinraj was her fiancé and refused to go with her father.

Later, after she became pregnant, Manisha began asking Abinraj to marry her as promised. The police said during one of their quarrels, he kicked her hard in the stomach, leading to miscarriage. It was around this time that he revealed to her that he was in a relationship with another woman, Anitha, from the same locality.

Though shocked by this, Manisha contacted Anitha over phone and connected Abinraj, too, through conference call. She then requested the other woman to leave Abinraj and allow her to marry him. Manisha said they could be friends even after she got married to the man. However, Abinraj maintained that Anitha was the one he would choose because it was she who saved his life. After asking Manisha to complete her studies first, he cut the call abruptly.

By this time, his family came to know about the issue and became concerned that this could cause trouble for him in the future. They thus began putting pressure on Abinraj to marry Manisha, which he finally had to accede to. On August 25, Abinraj and Manisha exchanged their garlands outside the Besant Nagar Church in the presence of the family. However, the marriage was not officially registered.

After the marriage, the couple began residing together in Tirsulam. At around midnight on Sunday, just a week after the marriage, Abinraj returned home from work to find Manisha’s body hanging from the ceiling of the living room. The Pallavaram police who visited the spot retrieved the body and sent it for post-mortem examination at Chromepet government hospital. The body was later handed over to her father Murugan.

On Tuesday, when he checked Manisha’s mobile phone, Murugan found the recording of her conference call with Abinraj and Anitha. He handed it over to the police, who arrested Abinraj after he confessed that he was a relationship with both the women.
