Uncleared garbage raises a stink in ‘bin-less’ Royapuram
Residents of Surya Narayanan street in Royapuram complain that because of the lack of dustbins in their street and they are forced to throw garbage on the road which remains uncleared for more than a week.
Chennai
With the Corporation gradually doing away with the bins, irregular door-to-door collection of garbage has resulted in a neighbourhood scattered with trash, say locals.
‘Earlier, there was a dustbin nearby and sanitary workers used to empty it regularly. We don’t know when they took away the bin and now people throw their trash on the road.
Usually, sanitary workers would come once in a day to collect the waste from the streets, but for last one week, they have not been collecting the trash.
We filed a complaint with Corporation officials but there has been no response from them,” said Sathish R, who works at a mechanic shop at Surya Narayanan Street.
Residents claimed the waste strewn across the street becomes a breeding ground for various diseases and if left uncleaned for even one day, the entire stretch starts stinking.
“I have complained about this issue to the zonal official twice. He visited the area and questioned the sanitary workers and asked them to collect the garbage and clean the street regularly. But, nothing has changed,” said Vishwanth J, a resident.
Residents also said that at times, the garbage covers half the road and it becomes difficult for people to walk on it.
Speaking to DT Next, a Corporation official said, “Sanitary workers have been cleaning garbage dumped in every street regularly. We had to remove the bin as sanitary workers had to empty it twice a day.
When we received complaint from the locals, we visited the spot and ordered the workers to collect it every day. We will ensure the action is taken soon.”
