The CB-CID had started the probe following an order from the High Court and zeroed on the couple, H Srinivasan and his wife Rathinam.

According to the agency, Saraswathy, an authorised agent of the Postal Department, filed a complaint at Kodambakkam station stating that she had nominated Srinivasan of Kodambakkam for collecting the deposit amount from the customers of Kodambakkam Post office for the past 15 years. Between 2012 and 2017, he collected Rs 2,500 each from 28 RD accounts, but did not deposit the amount at Kodambakkam Post office. He cheated the customers to the tune of about Rs 42 lakh, she alleged.

Before CB-CID took up the probe in June, Srinivasan’s wife Rathinam tried to mislead the investigation by lodging a complaint at Ashok Nagar station claiming that her husband was missing.

However, the police team found during the probe that the couple had gone away from Chennai and settled at Pallathur in Sivaganga for the past two years. A CB-CID team headed by inspector S Meena arrested them couple, who was remanded in judicial custody.
