The Tirumangalam police have arrested a woman along with her son for kidnapping her husband’s business partners and threatening them in their confinement. A search is also on for the woman’s husband who is absconding.

The accused, J Sibi (29) and J Malarvizhi of Chromepet, were booked under Sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting armed with deadly weapon), 294(b) (uttering obscene words), 342 (wrongful confinement), 365 (Kidnapping or abducting with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine person), 384 (extortion) and 506(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The police said that the victims, Mohanasundaram and Nithin Thamba, were running an international education consultancy in Anna Nagar along with one Jinu Jebaraj, Malarvizhi’s husband. In his complaint, Mohanasundaram had stated that he and Nithin had given education documents of a group of students and money to Jebaraj to process their applications for admission in a Ukraine University in 2018. However, Jebaraj allegedly got visa only to a couple of students and also failed to return the money of remaining students.

On August 4, when Mohanasundaram and Nithin went to meet Jebaraj in Anna Nagar in this regard, they were allegedly kidnapped in a car and kept in a room in Ashok Nagar. The duo was allegedly threatened, assaulted and made to sign on empty stamp papers before being let off.

Based on their complaint on August 20, the police registered a case and arrested the mother-son duo as they were part of the crime. While they were remanded in judicial custody on Friday, a hunt has been launched for absconding Jebaraj.

However, the police sources said that the victims tried to process applications of some students after receiving lesser sum from them without the knowledge of Jebaraj. This irked the latter and made him resortto the crime.
