The woman was identified as Alkha Mishra of Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh. She was staying in Bengaluru. The police said that she came to Chennai and stayed at a hotel in Taramani for a day. When she was about to check out of the hotel, the staff at the reception noticed two bundles of demonetised notes in the denomination of Rs 1,000.

On a tip-off from the staff, the Taramani police rushed to the spot and secured her. However, during interrogation, Alkha Mishra allegedly told the police that she had been carrying the cash in her handbag since 2017 as she could not change the notes during demonetisation in 2016.

The police said Alkha separated from her husband, who reportedly lives in Canada, and that she gets money from her husband for her expenditure.

“She has money in her bank account and did not intend to cheat anyone with the soiled currencies. So, we seized the money from her to hand it over to the court. She is likely to be fined and let off,” said a police officer investigating the case.
