Chennaiites were in for a surprise as several parts of the city witnessed heavy rainfall for close to an hour, followed by drizzle for another hour on Wednesday late evening.
Chennai
The intense downpour started at around 6.30 pm in the city and continued till 7.30 pm. According to Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai, city outskirts around Meenambakkam witnessed heavy rains when compared to the nucleus of the city such as Nungambakkam, Egmore, Kilpauk and surrounding areas.
Owing to rain, traffic congestion was experienced in various parts of the city. According to private weather blogger, Pradeep John, who writes under the pen name Tamil Nadu Weatherman on social media, “Towering clouds moved from Chittoor via Tiruttani, Arokkonam, Tiruvallur, Avadi, Poonamalle and finally moved into parts of the city” resulting in rainfall in various parts of the city.
He also termed the rainfall as convectional rainfall as the clouds moved from west to east and added that the coastal areas received rainfall much later than the internal localities in the city. But, it is unlikely that it will rain on Thursday, the weatherman said.
