The victim, E Latika from Puliyarankottai village near Madurantakam, was a Class 5 student at the Panchayat Union Government Elementary School in the village. The school has 30 students and only one teacher apart from the principal, Devi (48). Devi reaches the school at 9 am every day. Before she arrives, a few students take the key from a staffer staying nearby and open the school gate. On Monday, Latika reached the school early and got the key from the school staffer, but she soon lost it and couldn’t find it.

Later, Devi arrived and opened the gates with a spare key that she carried. She then summoned Latika and beat her with sticks and kicked her. The villagers admitted Latika to Maduranthagam General Hospital and her parents filed a complaint with the Chittamur police. The Kancheepuram DEO R Krishnan also asked the Assistant Educational Officer to look into the matter.
