Residents complain of sewage spilled on road in Kalmandapam
For the residents of Kalmandapam in Royapuram, taking a bus can mean stepping through a road with overflowing sewage before boarding the vehicle.

The sewage from a roadside drain has been overflowing into the bus stop for about a week now and residents claim that despite repeated complaints, the authorities have not cleared it.
Purushothaman J, a resident of Kalmandapam, said, “The roads here are often lined with waste and when it rains, the roads get waterlogged with sewage water. This has been a regular problem here.”
“We contacted Metro Water officials, but it took them two weeks to come here and clean the drain,” he added.
Residents complained that the sewage occupies half the road, making it difficult for them to even walk on it. Even the pavements are broken.
Rajan R, who runs a saloon in the area, said, “If we want to step outside the shop we have to walk through the sewage. Owing to this, customers have stopped coming to our shop. Whenever it rains, the problem aggravates and the officials never act on time.”
Speaking to DT Next, Paneer Selvam, an executive engineer from Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewage Board, said, “We cleared garbage from the other side of the road. We have to check the sewage pipelines that passes through storm water drain in that area and ensure prompt action.”
