Police crackdown on manja makers, nab 2 in Tambaram
The city police on Sunday arrested two men, who were preparing kites with manja thread – laced with powdered glass – near Tambaram. The police crackdown came after two children were injured by the thread.

Those arrested have been identified as Murugan (26) and Murali (23) from Tambaram.
A few days ago, Gladson (5) from Perungalathur was travelling on a two-wheeler with his parents towards Tambaram. When they were on Gandhi Road in Tambaram, the boy suffered cuts on his throat after getting entangled with a manja thread. He was rushed to a private hospital nearby.
In a similar incident that took place in Tambaram on Saturday, a 3-year-old boy who was travelling with his parents on a two-wheeler was injured by a piece of manja thread near Duraisammy Reddy street in Tambaram. Last month, the police in Chitlapakkam had arrested three men who were flying kites with manja threads.
Following these incidents, the Tambaram police formed a special team and was trying to zero in on people who were supplying the thread that has been banned due to such repeated incidents. The team received a tip-off that a group was preparing manja at a house in Ranganathapuram in Tambaram. On Sunday, the police team surrounded the house and arrested Murugan and Murali. they have been remanded in judicial custody.
