A Corporation higher official said that the city-wide fever survey would be conducted for the first time and nurses of the civic body would be engaged for this.

“We have 700 nurses and they will go door-to-door to identify fever patients. When they find patients with the symptoms of any type of fever, the nurses will follow them up for three consecutive days by visiting them. If any patient continues to have the symptoms without any signs of recovery, they will be asked to visit nearby government or private hospital,” the official said.

While the target is to conduct the survey across the city, the nurses would concentrate on slum areas and the areas that had recorded outbreak of any viral diseases in the recent past. During the survey, the patients would be asked to undergo blood check-up to ascertain the type of disease spreading in the locality.

Explaining the need for such a city-wide survey, another official said that the northeast monsoon is nearing and during the rainy season, it is natural for citizens to catch viral fevers. “However, many residents tend not to take the fever seriously and do not go to the hospital. This has become common especially in slum areas. Apart from sending affected persons to the hospital, the survey would help in maintaining an accurate database of patients,” he added.

It is learnt that the civic body had first mooted to appoint NGOs or private agencies to conduct the survey but dropped the plan to hand over the responsibility to local nurses. The survey would start in a few weeks before the monsoon.

Meanwhile, the civic body has directed the government and private hospitals to report to the headquarters if they treat patients with viral fever.
