12,000 cops to be deployed on Independence Day, airport gets seven-layer security
In view of the 73rd Independence Day on August 15, 12,000 police personnel will be deployed across the city to tighten the security.
Chennai
A statement noted that a five-layer security system will be implemented at the secretariat area, where Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami is scheduled to hoist the National flag on August 15. High-tech CCTV cameras have been fixed around the area for policemen to monitor the place day and night.
Security has been increased at places where the public are likely to gather most. Railway stations, bus terminals, shopping complexes, amusement parks, Guindy children’s park, and the worship places will be under constant vigil. The police will also check all hotels across the city.
Meanwhile, Security has been stepped up at the airport, too. In view of the heightened security measures, coming days after the Centre stripped Jammu and Kashmir of its special status granted under Article 370 of the Constitution, air passengers have been asked to reach the airport well in advance. “Security has been beefed up in all areas of the airport, including the parking lot. Passengers flying out of Chennai are requested to reach the airport well in advance to avoid any inconvenience,” an official release said.
“The heightened security measures will be in place till August 31, 2019,” it added.
Officials said that a seven-layer security cover has been provided to the airport, one of the busiest in the country.
