Photos of one such vehicle, a Toyota Innova, painted in pink with ‘Amma Patrol’ sticker and child and women helpline numbers were doing the rounds on social media on Monday.
When senior officers were not available to comment on the initiative, sources said that it is a joint initiative of State and Central governments for better monitoring of crimes against women and children. “The patrol vehicles will be given to All-Women Police Stations in the city on a pilot basis and will be expanded to other districts,” said a source. An all-woman police inspector when contacted said that the patrol vehicles will be used in places with schools and colleges to attend crimes such as eve-teasing. The Chief Minister is expected to formally dedicate the patrol vehicles in a function within two weeks. It may be noted that Kerala government introduced ‘Pink Beat’ patrol vehicles last year.
