TN tops list of organ recipients in nation
Though the number of organ donors in Tamil Nadu has gone down, the state tops the list when it comes to the organ recipients, said Dr R Kanthimathy, the member secretary of Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (TRANSTAN) at an event to celebrate World Organ Donation Day at Government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday.
Chennai
Last year, the state recorded 20-30 organ donors per month which has dropped to 10-12 donors this year. Organs from one donor helps 7-8 patients.
“While other states are worried about the decline in the number of organ donors, our state is the only one across the country that benefits the most from organ transplantation. Road accidents have reduced up to 25 per cent in Tamil Nadu so the number of cases of brain deaths too has declined,” said Kanthimathy.
Only in Tamil Nadu, the TRANSTAN uses skin, tissues, kidney, liver and heart, among others for transplant, while most others states focus on heart and kidneys. Meanwhile, the waiting list for organ transplant reached 5,788 this year.
“If we get 100 heart donors, only 50-60 are found medically fit for transplant,” said Kanthimathy.
Dr P Vasanthamani, the dean of Government Kilpauk Medical College, said, “We want to tell the people that Tamil Nadu is playing a vital role in organ transplantation.
Even though there are fewer donors in the state, we are happy that there are more transplants taking place in our state.”
