Nobel Laureate and child rights activist Kailash Satyarthi, on his visit to SRMIST campus at Kattankulathur on Monday, invited the students and faculty to join the foundation’s 100 million campaign to eradicate child labour and slavery, and declared he was prepared to set up an office in the campus. This would be the foundation’s third office after London and Delhi.

In response, SRMIST president Dr P Satyanarayanan said a Centre of Child Rights would be opened in the campus in association with the Satyarthi Foundation.

This would act as a nodal unit which would make SRMIST the first educational entity in the country to start a Child Rights Centre, he said.

Kailash Satyarthi has rescued almost 88,000 children from the clutches of slavery, trafficking and child labour across the country. For his relentless work in the field, Satyarthi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 for his contribution towards making a child-friendly world.

To honour Satyarthi’s contribution towards a child-friendly world, the documentary, “The Price of Free”, which is based on the life and struggles of Kailash Satyarthi, was screened in the presence of actor Kamal Haasan. Regeena J Murli of Jeppiaar Engineering College was also present at the event to launch a welfare centre for women and children initiated by her.
