Egmore police crack 7-year-old murder case
Nearly seven years after a man was murdered at a rented premise near Pudupet, Egmore police finally cracked the case and arrested his roommate’s son for the murder.
Chennai
The accused has been identified as R Murugesan (31) of Sivaganga, who drove vehicles for MNCs in the city. The police said that Murugesan’s father Rajendran and Kumar, the deceased, worked in teashops in Pudupet and shared a rented premise at Nagappa Street in Koyyathope.
On the day of the murder in 2012, Murugesan came to meet his father Rajendran to handover his earnings to him. However, as Rajendran was stuck at work, Murugesan and Kumar went for a movie and got drunk together. When they returned home, when he was talking to his girlfriend over phone, Murugesan asked Rajendran to not make noise. This led to a quarrel between them. In a fit of rage, Murugesan attacked and strangulated Rajendran.
“Later, he called his friend to inform about the incident. As per the idea he suggested, Murugesan tried to call the 108 ambulance service. However, by mistake, he dialled 100 – the police control room. When the police reached the spot, he was shocked, but managed to spin a story to deceive police,” said a police officer who was part of the team that solved the case.
Murugesan told police that some men attacked Kumar and fled the spot, adding that he made the call from a SIM card he found on the road. The investigation was stuck as the police believed his theory.
However, when they went through the details of the case recently, the officials found out that calls made from the SIM card matched before and after the murder. Immediately, police picked up Murugesan, who admitted to the crime during interrogation. He was remanded in judicial custody on Friday.
