Vanuvampet comes under the control of Chennai Corporation at zone 12. A few months ago, the Corporation without any prior information closed the burial ground and asked the locals to use the electric burial ground at the Kannan Colony in Alandur.
The move by the Corporation irked the locals and they were totally against it. They claimed that they could not travel till Alandur and demanded the Corporation to reopen the burial ground.
Meanwhile, Corporation staff started the works to change the burial ground as MCC. On seeing this, the residents were completely upset with the decision of the Corporation.
R Kumar from the locality said, “It is good to build Micro Compost Center but at the same time the burial ground is also important for us and the officials should open it again.” The residents want the Corporation to upgrade the burial ground as an electric crematorium like the one in Alandur.
A few weeks ago, hundreds of locals gathered and staged a protest at St Thomas Mount-Velachery Road demanding the same. The police and Corporation staff arrived at the spot and convinced them with a promise to take action but still the ground remains closed.
When contacted, the zonal officer S Ramamoorthy he said, “ Since we don’t have a place to set up a MCC, we decided to close the burial ground. Now we have taken the issue to the higher officials and hopefully they would come up with a solution soon,” he said.
