Corpn makes Manali ‘no bin’ zone, saves 8L a month

According to a Corporation official, Manali zone has been generating around 40 tonnes of garbage on a daily basis. “ Before 2015, there were 251 compactor bins placed across the zone. In a first, segregation was implemented in division 20 and 20 bins were removed during the first phase,” the official said.

The official added that all the bins were removed and the zone was announced as bin-less and zero waste garbage zone. As per the zero-waste method, garbage collected would be segregated at resource recovery centres. The initiative alsoremoved five compactor garbage lorries from service apart from the 251 compactor bins.

At present, conservancy workers in the zone collect garbage door-to-door and have also been given battery-operated tricycles. “We sensitise residents, who would fail to segregate their household waste. Organic waste is being converted into manure while glass, plastic and others are being sold. We are taken steps to build an incineration plant to burn inert waste into residue,” Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash said.

The Commissioner added that the zero-waste garbage and bin-less garbage collection would be implemented in all the zones in future. “We are also planning to give money collected by selling manure to conservancy workers as an incentive. The move has also helped in dealing with traffic jams,” he said.
