Chennai
The deceased were identified as G Nagalakshmi (23) of East Godavari district and K Bhavani (23) of West Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh. The rider was identified as Siva, also from Andhra Pradesh, who is undergoing treatment as he sustained injuries on his legs. The police said he is out of danger.
The police said they were mechanical engineering graduates who were undergoing training at a calibration company at Egmore. The women were staying at a women’s hostel in Velachery, while Siva was staying in Madipakkam.
On Tuesday morning, Siva picked up the women from the hostel, said police. Around 8.30 am, as they were riding on Anna Salai to reach the firm at Egmore, Siva tried to overtake an MTC bus from the left side of the vehicle near Nandanam Arts College. There was only a little space between the bike and the bus, as there was another bike on his left.
CCTV footage retrieved from the spot showed that Siva lost control in his attempt to overtake the bus. His bike skidded after its handlebar brushed against the bus, and all three fell in front of the bus. They came under the bus, which ran over the women as there was too little time for the bus driver to apply breaks.
The other two-wheeler rider, too, lost balance, but was saved because he fell on the left side.
Shocked passers-by rushed to their rescue, but the women died on the spot as the bus tyres ran over their heads. Siva was rushed to Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital while the bodies of the two women were sent to the Royapettah Government hospital for post-mortem examination.
Guindy Traffic Investigation police registered a case and arrested the MTC bus driver Gunasekaran on charges of causing death due to negligence. He was released later. Further inquiry is on.
