Intervening in the debate on the demand for grants for the transport department, Vijayabhaskar said that two electric buses would be provided for free by city-based automobile manufacturer Ashok Leyland.
“We will start operation of the electric buses on trial basis in the city,” he said, while replyingto the query of DMK Neyveli MLA Saba Rajendran.
Vijayabhaskar also said that the state government was first in the country to sign the “Clean Bus Declaration” with C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group. “It has been proposed that 2,000 electric buses and 12,000 BS VI buses would be bought in a phased manner. In the first phase, Germany- based KfW will finance the procurement of 100 electric buses. Out of this, 80 buses will run in Chennai and 10 each in Madurai and Coimbatore,” he said.
