While the police have apprehended one of the attackers, a special team has been formed to track the absconding suspects. The Peerkankaranai police rushed to the spot after a video of the men attacking the public and staff at the pump went viral on social media. The police said that the petrol pump owner Govindaraj’s son Pugalenthi suffered injuries on the hand when he tried to stop the attackers, while two customers, too, suffered minor injuries. The injured were admitted to a private hospital.
The Peerkankaranai police have collected video clips and are trying to trace the suspects. During inquiry, the employees of the bunk identified an accused as Mani (32), a resident of Nedunkundram near Perungalathur. The police said Mani, who was sacked three months ago, visited the petrol bunk in an autorickshaw with two friends around 10 pm on Sunday. Ilavarasan, an employee, got into an altercation with Mani and he was attacked. Other staff members had to intervene to rescue Ilavarasan.
While the staff managed to detain Mani’s friends and the autorickshaw, he escaped from the scene. About an hour later, Mani returned with six others, all wielding weapons, and ransacked it. They also threw barricade cones on the employeesand customers.
