The Royala Nagar police have arrested three persons and launched a hunt for three others who allegedly barged into a house and escaped with nine mobile phones after attacking the residents. The accused — Arputharaj, Harishkumar and Muthuraja — were remanded in judicial custody and all nine stolen phones were seized from them.

The incident happened on Wednesday night when Anishraj of Maharashtra, a student of a private college in the locality, was at his rented house along with friends at Ramapuram. A gang of men barged into the house claiming to be police and attacked them before fleeing with their mobile phones and cash. The gang, who had left a mobile phone at the house, called the students later and demanded money if they wanted their phones back.

On suspicion, Anishraj lodged a complaint with the Royala Nagar police and a case was registered. CCTV footage retrieved from the locality helped police identify the suspects and three of them were secured. Investigation revealed that they targeted college students staying in the locality to rob their valuables and carried out the loot at Anishraj’s house assuming that they would not go to the police. A hunt has been launched for the remaining three suspects.
