    Corporation identifies 24,500 buildings without RWH structures

    During their door-to-door drive, officials from the Chennai Corporation have in two weeks identified more than 24,500 buildings that do not have rainwater harvesting structures.

    According to a statement released by the Chennai Corporation, the teams which were formed to inspect buildings had visited 53,847 buildings till Friday. “Of them, 24,908 buildings have rainwater harvesting structures in good condition and 4,240 buildings need minor maintenance, but 24,699 buildings do not have the structures,” the statement said.


    Meanwhile, Corporation Commissioner G Prakash held a meeting with Metrowater officials on Saturday and reviewed the progress. He also directed the ward-level teams to complete inspecting buildings within the stipulated period.


    Chennai Corporation and Metrowater have constituted 200 teams for 200 divisions. The teams have been directed to identify 1,000 buildings in their respective divisions that lack rainwater harvesting structures. The plan is to create new 2 lakh rain water harvesting structures before October 30.


    An official said that the city has around 12.75 lakh buildings and the teams are concentrating on big buildings such as shopping complexes, movie halls, multi-storeyed apartments and others during phase one.
