Corpn plans ‘plogging challenge’ for citizens
To clean city beaches while encouraging the participation of residents, the Greater Chennai Corporation has decided to organise ‘Chennai Plogging Challenge’, which would be held every month. The first event will happen on Sunday on Elliot’s beach.
Chennai
Citizens can participate in the event individually or in groups. The participants should jog on the beach, and collect trash and plastic waste littered there, said a Chennai Corporation press statement.
Plogging is a combination of jogging and ‘plocka upp’, the Swedish term for ‘to pick up’. After first starting in Sweden around 2016, the trend has gained interest worldwide.
“Plogging provides variation in body movements and is more beneficial than just jogging. It also raises awareness among the community other than helping the neighbourhoods to be clean. Chennai Plogging Challenge also aims at increasing awareness on reducing per capita plastic footprint,” the release added.
Individuals or groups who are interested to participate in the event may contact 9445194802 or report at the venue by about 5.45 am on Sunday. The event would start at 6 am. The challenge is open to all and there would be no admission fees. An official said that the event, first organised at Elliot’s beach, would be expanded to other locations in future.
