2.7 kg smuggled gold seized, nine from TN held
Nine passengers who arrived at Chennai airport from Sri Lanka were nabbed for smuggling gold. In all 2.7 kg gold of 24k purity, with an estimated value of Rs 96 lakh, was seized.

According to a statement from the Customs, Imamdeen Sathakathullah (26), Thazkar Nizam (33), Vanniyappan Kasinathan (58), Muzammir (26), MohamedAzarudeen (21), Kalandar Hussain (26), and Sathik Ali (32) from Ramanathapuram; Labeer Mujip Rahuman (25) from Pudukottai and Haja Alavudheen (25) from Chennai were stopped at the exit on suspicion after they reached here on an Indigo flight from Colombo on Friday.
As they were evasive in their reply, they were subjected to a thorough examination during which the Customs officers found that they were carried gold in the form of a rubbery spread, and also bits, inside their rectum.
This was seized under the provisions of Customs Act, 1962, and further investigation is on, the statement added.
