Speaking in the Assembly, Nandakumar said, “The state government announced supply of water from Jolarpet to Chennai and the process has commenced, but due to the supply there is water shortage in the district and so the state should take steps to supply water from Mettur integrated water scheme.”
Ever since Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced the supply of drinking water from Jolarpet to Chennai, MLAs from Vellore had been demanding additional water as the district is already facing water shortage.
Earlier, DMK Treasurer and Katpadi MLA Duraimurugan, opposed supply of water from Jolarpet and demanded additional supply of water to Vellore district. Now, another DMK MLA have joined Duraimurugan in demanding additional water for Vellore district.
He said that they are not opposing supply of water to Chennai, but the government should ensure that Vellore district does not face water shortage situation.
Minister for Local Administration SP Velumani, replied that by supplying water to Chennai Vellore district will not face the problem of water shortage. “Under the drinking water scheme, Vellore district will get 34 MLD of water and supply of 10 MLD of water will not impact water situation in the district. The scheme was drafted in such a manner that it will cater the needs of population of Vellore district for the next 25 years,” said Velumani.
He further said that Chief Minister in the recent review meeting also informed that Vellore district will not be at a disadvantage if water is supplied from Jolarpet to Chennai.
