Kannan Parthasarathy and his wife T Gayathri came up with the idea after their son Keshav suggested they do something different for their anniversary. “We are a family of animal lovers and when my son came up with this idea, we immediately agreed,” Kannan said.
On Wednesday, the family came to the zoo and adopted 21 lion-tailed macaques and 18 Nilgiri langurs. Deputy director at the zoological park Sudha Raman said, “We are happy to see people coming forward to adopt animals. This should set an example to others.”
Both the lion-tailed macaque and Nilgiri langur are critically endangered species indigenous to the tropical rain forests of the Western Ghats. The contributions by Kannan and his family would be used for the animals’ food and maintenance.
