    60-yr-old kills drug addict son, surrenders in Selaiyur

    A 60-year-old man murdered his 24-year-old son, who was addicted to drugs and alcohol, while the latter was sleeping in the early hours of Tuesday near Selaiyur.

    The police said that Udayakumar (60), a tailor, surrendered at the Selaiyur police station soon after the incident.


    The deceased was identified as Manikandan from Anandapuram in East Tambaram, a bike mechanic. According to the police, he was addicted to drugs and did not go to the job regularly. He also used to beat his parents demanding money to buydrugs and alcohol.


    Manikandan was also involved in several group clashes and had been arrested by the police a few times. His parents advised him to quit drugs and alcohol, and concentrate on his work to come up in life. However, Manikandan did not bother to listen to them.


    On Monday night, Manikandan reached home after consuming liquor and asked money from Udayakumar for buying alcohol the next day. When Udayakumar refused to give the money, Manikandan beat himand went to bed.


    Manikandan fell asleep, Udayakumar decided to kill him and went to his room around 1 am. He then took a grinder stone and smashed Manikandan’s head with it.


    After confirming that Manikandan was dead, Udayakumar surrendered at the Selaiyur police station. The police went to the spot, found Manikandan’s body lying in a pool of blood and sent it to the Chromepet Government Hospital for post-mortem examination. Udayakumar was produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
