After a State executive committee meeting to discuss increasing the pay for government doctors and post graduate students, they have also announced a one-hour dharma in all districts on Friday. The associations have declared relay fasting on July 15 and 16, while government doctors would boycott outpatient services on July 18.

Government doctors’ associations are unhappy with the medical college students’ stipend and doctors’ salaries, pointing out that it was low compared to other States.

Last year, they had staged a protest demanding salaries and allowances on a par with their counterparts in other States and at the Centre. However, the government has not taken any action in this regard, the association alleged.

“While the hike in pay has been a long pending demand, the service postgraduate students are posted to serve in the medical colleges and hospitals without transfer counselling. We want the Directorate of Medical Education to conduct transfer counselling, and also implement 50 per cent quota for service candidates in PG admissions,” said Dr C Sundaresan, state president the association.
