Traffic violators to get e-challans at home soon
The city traffic police are all set to roll out contactless enforcement while booking traffic violators. The police have already made Anna Nagar and surrounding areas a traffic regulation observation zone by registering e-challans using automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras and ‘booked 90,000’ people during a trial run.

“It can go operational any time,” an officer noted. As many as 63 ANPR cameras have been installed in Anna Nagar. Apart from reading the number plate, the cameras will also take photos of the vehicles flouting the rules and it will be attached to the e-challans.
The challans will be delivered to your address. “Incidents such as signal violation, riding without a helmet, riding triples, rash driving, defective number plates and speeding will be booked,” said a traffic policeman. These cameras have been installed at Anna Nagar Roundtana, Shanthi Colony, Estate Road, 18th Main Road and Anna Nagar police station junction. The surveillance room is set up at Anna Nagar Roundtana at a cost of Rs 2.5 crore. Among the 63 cameras, 40 have been installed to track the number plates of vehicles, 18 will provide proof of the violation and 5 will be used for total surveillance, enabling the police to take action against offenders.
