    The British Deputy High Commission has urged the Greater Chennai Corporation to enforce bylaws of Municipal Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, to attain sustainable solid waste management in Chennai.

    The recommendations were made during a workshop held in Chennai on Saturday, in which Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash, British Deputy High Commissioner Jeremy Pilmore-Bedford and officials from other local bodies took part.


    Apart from urging the civic body to enforce Municipal Solid Waste Management Rules, the British deputy high commission had also recommended the civic body to ensure effective source segregation to complete circular economy loop.


    The civic body has been asked to enrich its composts with specific nutrients to increase the potential market as the marketing of compost requires high and consistent quality.


    The potential for use of refuse-derived fuael (RDF) in thermal power plants, which has not been put into practice in Indian scenario, require to be explored further, the deputy high commissionrecommended.


    Speaking at the event, Jeremy Pilmore-Bedford said, “We are glad that the UK’s expertise is helping to design a strategic roadmap for local urban bodies in Chennai and Coimbatore, demonstrating yet another aspect of the broad-based relationship between UK and India.”


    Meanwhile, Commissioner Prakash pointed out that the decentralisation of waste management would pave way formore success in dealing with municipal waste.
